This year at WWDC 2015, Apple unveiled a bunch of their recent innovations. While the announcements weren’t necessarily ‘ground breaking’, there are a few head turners in the mix that made some buzz. What we do know is that Apple is merely setting up the foundation for a new world of interactivity between users and their technology.

We have summarised some of the most relevant and important announcements presented at WWDC this year.

iOS 9

iOS 9 is coming. Don’t expect a major change in terms of looks; the design seems pretty much the same as the previous version however there are some significant factors to be noted. Siri got one of the biggest changes with a new design and some smart features added.

For instance, Siri will be able to warn you if you have an appointment coming up. She would be able to take into consideration the weather, current traffic estimations and factor this into the time she would send the warning.

For iPads, this update brings the long awaited ‘dual app view’ feature which will allow you to view two apps simultaneously side-by-side.

Desktop Upgrade – OS X 10.11 ‘El Capitan” 

The new upgrade is heavily focused on optimising performance on your computer. The upgrade also introduces a new version of Safari with options to pin favourite websites or even mute tabs.

Another upgrade includes the ‘Spotlight Search App’, which can now be shaped to the size you want. The app is said to be able to handle more complex line of questioning such as ‘Important mails I’ve been ignoring’, and it will bring up a list of emails that are in urgent need of your attention.

In essence, this upgrade should make your computer run 1.4 times faster according to Apple.

Watch OS 2 Improvements

The Apple Watch will be getting its share of improvements as well. A new ‘Time Travel’ feature will give users the ability to scroll through their schedule using the digital crown, forward or backwards.

Some of the other impressive features is the inclusion of Face Time, Public Transit Maps and more. Apple says that the interactivity between your watch and the apps should perform at much faster pace and deliver a deeper satisfaction to users.

Apple Music is now Available

It was only a matter of time before this became a reality. The ‘Music App’ received a new design which allows users to stream music via Spotify and a brand new internet radio station with real DJs and a feature that allows you to follow your favourite artists from your devices.

To be released by the end of June, people are eagerly waiting to try this new service, which will allow users to interact with their music on a much more personal level.

Apple Pay in the UK

Apple Pay is changing the way that you’ll pay for everything. In July, Apple Pay will be implemented in the UK with many banks already on board. In fact, nearly 70% of all major UK credit and debit cards will be compatible with this technology. What this means for consumers is that your phone or Apple watch immediately becomes your wallet!

Check out will be as easy as tapping your phone on a device, and walking out the door!

Apple Maps improvement

Apple Maps also had a major improvement with the long overdue ‘transit directions’ for 10 cities around the world and will assist you in providing step-by-step information for traveling in public transportation. You’ll even be able to calculate walking times and best possible route for entry and exiting from the nearest metro station.

News Stand is being Replaced

The old Newsstand app is a thing of the past. News replaces this app with a new presentation which is commonly referred to as a ‘Flipboard killer’. Similar to Flipboard, all your relevant articles are presented in a clear and concise manner with stunning animation, videos and photo galleries. Optimize the information you are most interested in and save time rummaging through news you don’t care about.

The initial launch of this app will be limited to the UK, US and Australia.

HomeKit

Providing you the ability to control your entire house through your smart device, Homekit gives the user the ability to control automation devices including lights, heat, locks, blinds and can even be controlled via Siri. Now you can talk to your home, and it abide by your commands. It can be controlled via your iPhone or even your Apple watch!

Making ‘Swift’ Open Source

For all you coders out there, Swift is going open source. In addition to adding a ton of new features, Apple announced that while many developers might be amazed at this announcement, that this is only the beginning ‘what is to come’. Now developers will be able to use Swift for iOS, OS X and Linux.
