Apple surprised all at its World Wide Developers Conference WWDC 2014 in June by launching Swift, a multi-paradigm programming language for developing iOS and OS X apps.

What is more surprising is that Swift had been in the making for 4 years and nobody knew about it.

Swift programs are developed using Xcode, Apple’s integrated development environment (IDE).

Swift and Objective-C can sit alongside each other in the same application. This allows you to create mixed-language apps containing both Swift and Objective-C files that can communicate with each other.

Swift has been designed with a modern and easy to write syntax.

Procedural and Object Oriented Programming with Swift

APPROACH

REQUIREMENT

Swift Syntax

No semicolon at the end of statements

A single .swift file for class declaration and implementation

Variable of all type are declared with the “var” keyword

Constants are declared with the “let” keyword

C like syntax for control flow and loops

Array declaration similar to Objective-C

Safe and Interactive

Automatic memory management (ARC), variable initialization before use, array check for overflow and restricted direct access to pointers, all make Swift safe and enable even new developers with little or no experience to write more reliable apps.

With Swift, Apple has included a new feature called Swift Playgrounds, which allows developers to edit their code and see how the changes affect their app in real-time.
